Elsie de Wolfe naci\u00f3 en Nueva York en 1859, por lo que su vida adulta abarc\u00f3 plenamente el cambio de siglo y el surgimiento y desarrollo del Movimiento Moderno en la arquitectura, que cambi\u00f3 dr\u00e1sticamente la manera de dise\u00f1ar edificios y por supuesto c\u00f3mo se entend\u00edan los hogares. <\/span><\/p><p class=\"Pa4\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">Fue la \u00fanica hija de un importante doctor, y el hecho de nacer y crecer entre la alta sociedad estadounidense hizo que desde la ni\u00f1ez estuviese en contacto con conceptos como el \u201cestilo\u201d o la \u201cbelleza\u201d. Aunque vivi\u00f3 en Nueva York, estudi\u00f3 en su infancia en Edimburgo con su familia materna, donde fue presentada en sociedad en la corte de la Reina Victoria. Fue sin embargo su buen gusto, en este caso a la hora de vestir a sus personajes y dise\u00f1ar sus escenarios, lo que destac\u00f3 una vez m\u00e1s entre la cr\u00edtica y la audiencia.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"Pa4\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">En 1903 decidi\u00f3 aparcar su carrera en los escenarios para centrarse en lo que hasta entonces solamente hab\u00eda sido una afici\u00f3n, el interiorismo. Este paso con el que consigui\u00f3 profesionalizar la decoraci\u00f3n de interiores ser\u00eda muy importante, no solo para ella sino para la historia del interiorismo en general. Lo que hasta entonces hab\u00eda sido una obligaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s de las amas de casa se convirti\u00f3 en una profesi\u00f3n de la cual se pod\u00eda sacar beneficios. <\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Su reputaci\u00f3n no solo como actriz sino tambi\u00e9n como dama de la alta sociedad y como mujer de gran estilo le ayudaron en sus inicios en la decoraci\u00f3n, as\u00ed como el ejemplo de su propia casa, Washington Irving House, que compart\u00eda con la que fuera su compa\u00f1era, Elizabeth \u2018Bessie\u2019 Marbury3. Fue aqu\u00ed donde dio rienda suelta a su estilo, contraponiendo el dise\u00f1o del local al t\u00edpico de los clubes masculinos, oscuros y pesados. Utiliz\u00f3 una paleta de colores claros, espacios amplios y bien iluminados, tapizados estampados, y muebles de mimbre. Adem\u00e1s a\u00f1adi\u00f3 plantas naturales en los interiores para aportar frescor y vitalidad. La popularidad del club la lanz\u00f3 a la fama, y a partir de entonces se convirti\u00f3 en un referente, llegando a abrir un importante estudio en la Quinta a\u00f1os no solo decor\u00f3 interiores dom\u00e9sticos y lugares p\u00fablicos, sino que tambi\u00e9n escribi\u00f3 numerosos art\u00edculos y columnas en diferentes revistas de dise\u00f1o, como \u2018Good Housekeeping\u2019 and \u2018The Delineator\u2019. Todos esos art\u00edculos ser\u00edan los que luego reunir\u00eda para publicar el que ser\u00eda su libro m\u00e1s importante, <em>The house in good taste<\/em>, publicado en 1913 y que pronto se convirti\u00f3 en un referente para el dise\u00f1o del momento.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Su fama tambi\u00e9n lleg\u00f3 a Europa, donde en Francia compr\u00f3 y restaur\u00f3 la que ser\u00eda su segunda residencia, Villa Trianon en Versalles. La vivienda fue una de sus actuaciones estrella, que adem\u00e1s pas\u00f3 a ser centro de m\u00faltiples fiestas y recepciones llevadas a cabo por su due\u00f1a, la cual se reafirm\u00f3 todav\u00eda m\u00e1s en su papel de anfitriona destacada entre las altas esferas. Eran famosos sus eventos, en los que nunca faltaban elementos sorprendentes y extravagantes, actuaciones, y sorpresas para los invitados. Fue sin embargo un matrimonio plat\u00f3nico, con un punto de conveniencia, en el que la pareja compart\u00eda fiestas y viajes pero viv\u00eda de manera separada e independiente. Elsie sigui\u00f3 manteniendo su relaci\u00f3n con Elizabeth Marbury hasta la muerte de \u00e9sta, en el a\u00f1o 1933. Sin embargo, al finalizar el conflicto ella regres\u00f3 a su vivienda en Versalles, donde vivi\u00f3 hasta su fallecimiento en 1950.<\/p><p>Durante sus 90 a\u00f1os de vida, Elsie de Wolfe explor\u00f3 cientos de lugares, conoci\u00f3 a miles de personas, y vivi\u00f3 multitud de experiencias. Su independencia, \u00edmpetu y espontaneidad hicieron de ella una mujer excepcional que se vali\u00f3 de su imagen p\u00fablica para defender todo aquello en lo que cre\u00eda, desde su horror por el Estilo Victoriano hasta la independencia de todas las personas.
